Back in 2014, I (Mattias Ek) was armed with fresh SEO and SEM skills—but no clients, no credibility, and no real clue how to build an agency from scratch.
I quickly hit a wall. Nobody wanted to hire someone with no track record. And trying to stand out in a saturated SEO/PPC space? Nearly impossible. Ranking for high-value keywords would take years, and PPC was out of the question—clicks for agency-related terms were going for $26+ just to appear on the first page.
Then, out of nowhere, I got a call.
A top-tier web agency offered me an interview for an SEO role that didn’t even exist yet—referred by someone I barely remembered. That opportunity turned into a full-time position, where I ended up building their entire SEO+SEM department from the ground up.
Over the next 8 years, I led marketing initiatives for 200+ companies in every industry imaginable. But even then, one thing kept nagging me: as a web agency, we still struggled with client acquisition.
We were doing everything “right”—ranking well on Google, running paid campaigns, delivering great work—but new business still came mostly from word-of-mouth. The rankings I fought to earn brought in nearly nothing. The PPC campaigns? Expensive and inconsistent—like throwing money down a wishing well.
That’s when it hit me:
If we were dealing with this – other agencies must be too.
